Band: My Body Sings Electric

With the holidays coming right around the corner, lately I’ve been asking just about everyone what they want for Christmas. If you weren’t already wondering, almost all of my friends happen to be musicians; making it extremely easy to shop for them. One of the best gifts that I could’ve asked for this year, however, I already got; music. The Denver music scene has produced so many amazing bands that have made it very large in the industry, names like The Fray, One Republic, Flobots, Breathe Carolina and 3OH!3 are merely just a few that have become well known around the country, even the world. What I’ve learned over the past year, without a doubt, is that the music industry is one of the most competitive industries there is out there. Everyone is trying to become something big and there’s definitely no lack of talent throughout Colorado. One of the bands that has started to really emerge and make it into those next steps of becoming something majorly colossal is My Body Sings Electric.

The five part band is releasing their new single on December 6th, luckily I was given the opportunity to listen to it before that and I’m very, very impressed. There aren’t any songs of My Body Sings Electric’s that I don’t like, regardless, it amazes me the following that this band has continued to have; one of the largest fan bases I’ve seen with the exception to a few of my other favorite local bands. Their sound is something that’s quite different than the other locals, a little more pop-ish and always very high energy kind of songs. The kind of songs that no matter where I am, what time of day it is, who I’m with, or what I’m doing, instantly puts me in an amazingly luscious mood. My body is literally singing electric every time I listen to My Body Sings Electric. The band is starting their fall tour, Terminatour, next Saturday, November 26th until December 2nd, with their single “Doctor” releasing on the 6th to the public. I suggest everyone keep a close eye on this band, they’re doing fantastic things right now, luckily I’ve gotten to see these butterflies spread their wings.

Album: Air Dubai’s New EP; Day Escape

I’ve been sitting on the edge of my seat since last October, waiting for more Air Dubai. Although the Remixtape was released in March this year, hearing new music in any sense is always something that’s refreshing. Day Escape (released on 10/25/11) is like a cold glass of water on a hot summer day, something that I know is helping this band grow and become even more amazing than they already are. Between the trumpet, guitar, bass, drums, and two voices that make angels in the sky stop and listen, this EP is the best thing to come from this incredibly talented ensemble yet. Obviously there hasn’t been a song or beat to yet disappoint fans but Day Escape is something else in an entirety. This is the kind of EP that all bands expect and hope to make, but usually (honestly) aren’t as successful with…it hits home. After Jon Shockness (Vocals), told me “It’s not a perfect EP but I hope people dig it and at least get what we were trying to do.” I almost wanted to scream “Oh, I more than dig it.” Like white on rice.

Air Dubai's new EP Day Escape(10/25/11)

It’s not recent news that I love and support local music on a daily basis, but this is, hands down, one of the best EP’s that I’ve heard this year. Air Dubai has always been something that was never haphazard, easily one of the most wonderfully put together group of individuals in this music industry in Denver. This band is undoubtedly one of the most heartfelt things that I’ve ever had the luxury of listening to, it’s practically silk in my ears. These gentlemen don’t even need “girls to flirt with” (Lights Down) because everything about them, from swagger to their God given talent just shines brighter than the sun. Air Dubai is the kind of music that you don’t want to and can’t stop listening to from the very second that you get started, I can’t wait to see what they’re going to grow into because we all know it’s gonna be larger than life. They may be careful and never fall in love, but I’m so in love with every note in Air Dubai’s new EP.

Don’t hesitate to preorder their EP, Day Escape, released on 10/25/11.

Music To Look Out For: Popcult

As Bob Marley once so lovingly said, “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” And how true it is. These days there are a lot of bands trying to get exposure, a lot of musicians transitioning into new things, and then there are the ones that are newly surficing. Popcult happens to be one of those bands. Just recently releasing their EP and coming into the Denver music scene, Popcult (Justin Renaud, Tyler Venter, Alex Halvorson, and Brandon Proff) is starting to catch on like wildfire. After playing a show with Mr. Right and Yeah Great Fine at Moe’s Original BBQ on 10/7, among a few others, the band is really starting to get the credit that they deserve.  The second I heard ‘Moon Memory’, I was drunk with love for this band. Popcult’s 6 song EP is like a soundtrack to the best dream I’ve ever had. Their sound is so smooth and something that really gets you thinking, rather than just listening. Hearing Popcult for the first time was like being a child and getting to experience a Creamsicle, it was just…yummy. Without a doubt, Popcult is going to make it in this industry and I plan on supporting them the entire way. The self-titled EP can be found on YouTube as well as Spotify. Don’t risk having regrets, get out and listen to this band, you won’t be sorry, hell, you’ll probably thank me.

Band: Vices I Admire

It’s not very often that I can say there are immoral and wicked activities that I regard with warm approval, however now that Vices I Admire have been brought to my attention, I might have to say otherwise. Being a very well-known fact that I enjoy heavier/bolder music and even am known to be more of a “grungy bitch” than an “indie bitch”, when it was recommended that(because of my love for bands such as The Photo Atlas and Take To The Oars) I give Vices I Admire a listen, I was in. Denver has easily one of the best music scenes; not merely because of the amount of talent that there is, but also largely because there’s so many diverse sounds. The Politics of Apathy, the first album released by Vices I Admire, reminds me entirely of a vocal sound combination of so many different people all in one that I can’teven give you a good example.

Vices I Admire

Vices I Admire

The fact that I can’t think of who this band reminds me of is a very good thing; originality. ‘Keep Killin’ Me’ reminded me a lot of something along the lines of Candlebox but with such an extraoridinarily different sound. I’m extremely picky about who I listen to and honestly I’m quite judgemental when it comes to music because I don’t believe that everyone can be considered a musician, however – I believe Vices I Admire are just that. This band is right up my alley.  While there are so many rock, grunge, hardcore, pop, alternative, bands in this city, each and every song of Vices I Admire that I’ve listened to has a little piece of  every single genre. Their combination of percussion and heavy guitar sound puts me in the exact same mood that I get into when I listen to bands such as Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Local H, and even Blind Melon. Not being a very big fan of screamo because I think it sounds quite ridiculous, when lead singer David Curtis screams, it doesn’t sound like screaming. It flows. One thing that I can very highly respect is a singer who can pull this sort of thing off(i.e. David Draiman) and I really love the vibe that Vices I Admire sets off. Their sound is like the feeling you get after drinking an entire pot of coffee and not in the jittery way, in the way that you can feel your heart beating. Your feet stomping. Your entire body singing to this sound. I felt sort of like I woke up from a two day sleep and awoke to something…refreshing.

‘Cavity’ puts me in such a mood that I don’t even know how to express how I feel other than defined by the instrumental design and voice of this perfectly put together band. Sitting in Barnes and Noble surrounded by college kids, tapping my feet and shaking my head to the beat of Mark Towne’s(Drummer) beats and Mickey Dollar(Guitar) and Dan Battenhouse’s(Bass) sound may make me look like a complete lunatic to all the college kids writing their papers, but damn; I don’t think I’ve ever been so pumped inside a Barnes and Noble in my entire life. This is definitely a band to watch out for and something that should be on at least three different play lists that you have on your iPod because of their compelling sense of diversity with every single note. These guys are my suggestion for October, don’t miss out on them.

New Music Tuesday – Sleeper Agent’s Celebrasion

Out today is Sleeper Agent’s first full length album Celebrasion. Last week I had the pleasure of seeing Sleeper Agent perform at Moe’s Original BBQ in Englewood. While I was only vaguely aware of the band prior to the concert, I am still surprised that they played such a small venue! Guaranteed the next time they come through, it will be at a much bigger venue.

Who is Sleeper Agent? They are a garage-rock/pop band from Kentucky who are so incredibly talented and very young! That does not mean that they are not versed in the industry, I mean they are friends with local Bowling Green band, Cage The Elephant.

Also, in their songs it is easy to hear the many, varied, influencers. Their lead singer Alex Kandel sounds like a mix between The XX and Karen O but looks more like a Zooey Deschenel. Combine that with the raspy Jack White inspired voice of Tony Smith and you have an unbeatable pair who is a blast to watch. Plus, you have to admire her persistence when she met the band until she joined (full bio here). I wouldn’t be surprised if you heard one of their songs on an Apple commercial in the coming months.

I am not sure what the relationship status is between Tony and Alex, but as you can see in some of the videos below, they are incredibly flirty toward each other, both on stage and off. My favorite is their interaction while singing on Bottomed Out, with the back and forth singing into the same mic, which she playfully pulls him around and tousles his hair. Seriously, it is a must watch video.

Their album Celebrasion was just released, but has been on repeat on my iPhone/computer for the past 2 weeks. Full album here (courtesy of Rdio.com):

This is what you missed out on from their concert last week:

I hope you enjoy this band and the videos, and please go check them out next time they come through your town.

Wavves Concert at Moe’s BBQ!!

We just got word that the band Wavves is coming to Moe’s BBQ on October 6th. This show is going to be huge, as this band has been growing like crazy in the last year with their songs being featured on MTV’s show Awkward.

This should be a fantastic show that you don’t want to miss out on.

Who is Wavves? Read their Bio (courtesy of Rdio):
Named for his fear of the ocean, Wavves, the skuzzy project of San Diego slacker Nathan Williams, is a blend of distorted no-fi and refined sunshiny melodies. Charmingly messy, most of his lyrics, while difficult to decipher, generally revolve around the subjects of weed, boredom, and the beach — when he isn’t poking jabs at the gloomy subculture of goth rock (a common theme, found in “Goth Girls,” “California Goths,” “Summer Goths,” “Surf Goths,” and “Beach Goths”). Wavves was conceived just after Williams, at age 21, quit his job as a clerk at Music Trader, while he was dividing his free time between skateboarding, writing for his hip-hop blog, Ghost Ramp, and making music using an ’80s Tascam cassette recorder and Garage Band software.

The Foot. Covers Adele’s Rolling In The Deep

Yes, this song is probably the most covered song of the summer and honestly, I am getting a little sick of it.

Most bands/artists that cover this song haven’t given it their own sound. They cover it just to cover it because of its popularity.

However, Denver band The Foot. adds their own unique sound and style to Adele’s song Rolling In The Deep.

What do you think?

Album: American Volume; Take To The Oars

It’s pretty common knowledge that between the two of us, Monika and I listen to more local music than anything else. Both of us are so involved in our lives on the web that we rarely have time to even buy CD’s anymore, so just about every CD in our cars are those of the locals who tell us to listen to them. I can honestly say that I hadn’t ever been to a Take To The Oars(formerly Vonnegut) show before or even heard them until the Underground Music Showcase, where I met lead singer, Ryan Gombeski, outside of Moe’s BBQ after a My Body Sings Electric show, and The Hi-Dive where I met guitar player, Mike Trujillo, with a giant sign saying “Take To The Oars” as he advertised up and down the streets for their show later that day. Needless to say we were all drinking that day and a very excited Ryan handed me his CD and said “Promise me you’ll listen to this.” Of course, being the supporter that I am, I agreed after he made me promise several times…and it just might’ve been one of the best promises that I’ve ever made. The CD, titled ‘American Volume’ was later put into my CD player on my way home at the end of UMS and I was more than impressed. I fell in love with everything about this album the second I heard it.

American Volume

Ryan Gombeski, Mike Trujillo, JP Manza, and Chris Weaver have literally created some of the best local music that I’ve ever heard, still even a little over a month after UMS, they’re the only CD in my car and what I listen to every morning on my way to work, and on the way home from downtown Denver. Their combination of rock, piercing vocals, and amazing beat has captured so many listeners ears that I think this band just may be the next big thing to come out of Colorado. ‘American Volume’, which can also be found on iTunes, was released early this year in January and although there’s only 9 songs on the album – each one is different from the last. Whether you need something to sit back and relax to or something to get you pumped up, the variety is written all over this album.

With influences like The Kinks, Incubus, Brand New, Candlebox,  Metallica, AC/DC, Glassjaw, and Thursday, Take To The Oars has created a sound for themselves that isn’t just something people can connect and relate to…it’s rock ‘n roll. Songs such as ‘Stones and Sticks’, ‘Learning To Breathe’, and my personal favorite ‘Vanishing Act’ really show the bands ability to create a bold sound that really hits the heart like a new vein pumping blood. ‘American Volume’ is Take To The Oars release album as they dispersed from the name ‘Vonnegut’ and so far it’s doing them more than justice. When I asked JP Manza, bassist and background vocalist of TTTO, why the band decided to change their name he said “…we needed a fresh start and a name change was in order. I was going through some of my favorite quotes, and found the Latin quote “Destitutus ventis, remos adhibe” or “If the wind will not serve, take to the oars.”   I kind of felt like this quote embodied what were were all feeling and had a good positive motivational tone that we could use to remind ourselves that we were the only ones that we could count on to get to where we wanted to be at.” And damn, was he right.

Take To The Oars’ chemistry both in ‘American Volume’ and on stage are phenomenal, it’s very clear that these men love what they do and they do it very well. “I’ve always been that kid that wanted to meet the rock stars I listened to, so I would stand outside the venues and buses during sound check and after shows.” Mike Trujuillo told me after I asked what kind of influences he had and how they changed his life. Let alone, the album itself has created something completely versatile and relatable; “These songs all had a common theme of loss, and finding something about yourself in the loss of something else.  All these songs seemed to describe a part of a life or story about someone, and you could name this person or chapter “The American Volume”. (JP Manza) Although the band was taking a risk on starting something new with a new name and new album, everything seemed to fall directly in the place that it was meant to. “About 6 years ago we(Chris Weaver) reconnected and started writing and playing music again.  We finally found a great line up with Mike Trujillo and JP Manza and here we are.” Told Ryan Gombeski.

Whether you’re having a great day and want to feel happy, or a really shitty one and want to feel sad, ‘American Volume’ is without a doubt the album to listen to in the car, outside, in the shower, mowing the lawn, cooking dinner, and even relaxing at home. This is one album that I strongly believe in, as well as a band that I think will go very far in this industry if given the correct and very well deserved exposure; and there’s no doubt that they’re going to fight to make it.

 Don’t miss them this Friday, August 26 @ Bender’s Tavern at 7:00P.M.

Band: Eldren

Well it’s safe to say that they’re definitely invested in your emotions, because Eldren has created their own type of sound that definitely gives you an “indescribable feeling” – and in the best possible way. The band recently released their first ever EP and it’s wholeheartedly said that we’re completely delighted. Eldren’s sound is both original and rhythmic, the exact type of music that no matter what type of song they’re playing, you can’t help but dance.

Eldren playing at Larimer Lounge 8/21/11

With their very own quirkiness, mix of several different instruments, and voices that make angels want to cry from happiness, Eldren has really almost created their own genre of music. Just when we thought that it was only their music that we were in love with, Eldren has one of the most intense live performing structures that I have ever seen.  With a “new-wave alternative” sound, Eldren is definitely a band that you aren’t going to want to miss in any situation.

You can catch them this Friday, August 26th, at Rock Bottom Brewery on 16th Street Mall @ 6:00PM…for FREE. This is going to be the best free show that you’ve ever seen in your entire life, so don’t miss out!
