Festival season is upon us, and we can’t wait! The first we are attending this year is FoCoMX, which takes place in Fort Collins on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14. Tickets are only $20 and that gives you access to 300+ bands playing at 30+ venues taking place over 2 days. Tickets are still available, so don’t wait!
It is becoming more and more apparent that Kaila and myself have differing tastes in music, so we have each crafted our own schedules for the weekend.

Any bands that we are missing that we *must* see? Let us know, or find us at FoCoMX and say hello! We love meeting other local music lovers!
Remember when I told you months ago that the band to look out for was Popcult? Well, here I am again this time with a flawless cover they did of Arcade Fire’s “Keep The Car Running”. I’ve definitely listened to this at least 7 times since I first started listening to it, something about their toned down MuteMath kind of sound really makes me fall in love with them. I expect these guys to be huge in no more than three years, without a doubt.
I first fell in love with Carbon Choir months ago, their crystal-clear sound, soothing guitar chords and warm tones were something that really stuck to me. This band has the kind of effect where you can blast their music on your stereo while driving in your car to absolutely nowhere, just taking in the sun and thinking about life. Joel Van Horne’s (lead singer) voice still gives me goosebumps every time I hit “play” on my iPod and that being said, Carbon Choir’s interlocking sound of indie and alternative rock have boldly sufficed my music taste buds. Luckily, we here at Indie Bitches were given the pleasure of listening to the full length album and I must say from both experience of seeing them live and excitement to see them again, their release is something that you aren’t going to want to miss.
Sakhalin is set to debut at The Marquis on 4/28, mark your calendars now because this album has been weaved so perfectly to flow with such a rhythmical sound, you’re not going to want to miss hearing it live. Thanks to the help of their numerous Kickstarter fans, the album was succesfully recorded, this time quite different from their 2009 album “High Beams”. As said in a recent press release, main songwriter and singer/guitarist Joel Van Horne says the name is “simply a reference to a Sakhalin tree (pronounced ‘sak-uh-lyn’), under which an imagined story of a love rekindled takes place in the title track Sakhalin.” Exploring a completely diverse kind of sound, Sakhalin was made without any auxiliary instruments (unlike their first album) which has created a very bold sense of heartfelt music. As I said, mark your calendars now because this is a release that you aren’t going to want to ignore.
fun. has been everywhere the past few weeks. It is no surprise that their three CO shows have sold out this week. Luckily I have snagged to tickets to both their Fort Collins show (Aggie) and their Denver show (Ogden). I can’t wait to see them, but I am also really excited to see Sleeper Agentagain!
I was so impressed with them last year, I am sure they have only gotten better. If their performance of Get Burned on Jimmy Fallon is any indication, I will not be disappointed this week:
And just for fun, here is fun.’s video of We Were Young:
(Yes, this video does creep me out a little bit, but it is a good song!)
For any of you headed to see fun. this tour, be sure to get there early enough to see Sleeper Agent!
Have I been living under a rock? Likely. Either way, I was just introduced to this awesome band, Crocodiles, who apparently was a hit at last year’s CMJ Music Marathon in NYC.
They are playing tonight with Bleeding Rainbow (who if you Google “bleeding rainbow band” the first result? readingrainbow.bandcamp.com – AWESOME!) at the Larimer Lounge.
Even though I attend hundreds of concerts a year (not exaggerating), it is very rare that I go alone. I can almost always find someone else to go with, or know of other people already going.
That being said, there are 2 concerts I am going to on Friday that no one will go to with me! You read that right. I am going to 2 concerts on Friday.
The first show of the night is Every Avenue. They are a band that I discovered through Rdio.com actually. I was listening to some band radio station and their song came on. I was instantly hooked, and have been obsessed ever since. I mean, I have listened to them so much I am a little scared to go look at Last.fm to see the total count.
I love this song, and video. I mean, just look at Dave. How could you NOT want to go see him perform? (and that voice *swoon*)
Ok, so the songs are a little poppy, but I love it.
They are playing at the Marquis with 4 other bands. Doors are at 6, and I think they go on around 10 (total guess here). Not your kind of music? That’s ok, the next artist is much different.
I first saw Wallpaper. open for Awolnation at Summit Music Hall and was impressed! This song/video doesn’t do their live performance justice, but it is worth a listen/watch:
Plus the theme of the song inspired the title of this song. Wallpaper. is playing at Larimer Lounge and I am *hoping* they go on after 11 so I can make it over after Every Avenue.
So there you have it. Two great concerts, one night. So who wants to be my best friend?
With 2012 being just around the corner, we’re looking forward to a lot of new things. New events, new songs, new cds, new bands. The only thing is – what are we going to do for the New Year? Every year there are a ton of parties, this year has a ton of shows to offer that we don’t wanna miss. However, at the end of the day, we do have to choose one (or two if we decide to disperse) events to enjoy and welcome the new year with. Although we can’t make all of them, we really hope and highly recommend that you get your butts to some shows…after all, what is a better way to start the new year than with music, drinks, and friends?
Everyone have a great New Years Eve, we’re looking forward to the future and we’ll see you next year!
Also, if you’re planning on drinking this weekend, be safe about it. From 6pm-6am on NYE/Day AAA will take you and your car home for free, whether you are a member or not: 800-222-4357. Have fun!
It’s a very good assumption that if you come to Indie Bitches, you’re wanting to hear about Denver local bands, releases, shows, and events in general. By making that assumption, I’m guessing that most of you have heard of bands such as The Doors, The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The White Stripes, right? Now another big question here is: what do these bands all have in common? Obviously they’re all incredibly talented and well-known musicians, but did you happen to notice that they’re successful without bass players? In The Whale is one of our local bands who was willing to take this risk. Their 2 part band releases an EP, “Cake”, at The Hi-Dive on January 28th, something all of you should be attending.
I remember the very day I first got my experience in the whale, it was with My Body Sings Electric, we were yall extremely hung over from the previous night of day three of the Underground Music Festival, and of course began drinking at eight that morning to try to and recover. I remember there were only a few people there that morning(anything before noon is early in music world), I was sitting in the front, feeling like hell and holding my beer like a cross. When Nate(guitar, vocals) and Eric(drums, backup vocals) came out I was expecting something along the lines of John Mayer, but instead got what I like to think of as if Ben Folds and Joan Jett having a lovechild with the heavy guitar sound of Jimmy Page. I will never forget looking back at Monika and saying “These guys are gonna be huge. They’re so damn beyond good!” As I danced in my seat uncontrollably. In The Whale was jaw-dropping. “Woman” was the first song I ever heard, one that will never get old no matter how many times I listen to it.
“Guys will do absolutely anything for a girl. It’s about how pretty girls, in our society, can get whatever they want.” Told Nate. The band originally started out as an acoustic project, when Nate met Eric the project turned 180 degrees and they were set in stone. “Eric and I just got along so well that we never wanted to add anyone else. We didn’t want to fuck it up.” Nate said after I asked him the reasoning for not involving a bass player. Influences such as The White Stripes, Silverstein, Third Eye Blind and Local H made the band evolve into something that’s ready to break out of its cage and bite the world. Who would’ve thought that something composed of only two men could create a rumble loud enough for the deaf to hear? In The Whale is a duo that’s definitely moving up fast, two men that are so in-sync with one another that it’s hard to keep your eyes or ears off of them when they take the stage. Don’t miss their house show on Dec. 16th, and the release of their first EP of the year, “Cake” at The Hi-Dive on January 28th, I know I won’t.
